If you are an avid photographer looking for a unique photographic experience, you need to do a "19th Century Workshop" with the folks at Photographers' Formulary in Condon, Montana. I recently completed the "Precision Digital Negatives & the Platinum/Palladium Print" workshop there. It was an unforgettable experience. For starters, the surroundings are just plain beautiful. Lynn & Bud Wilson's ranch (home of Photographers' Formulary) is in the beautiful Swan Valley in West-Central Montana. When I drove in there I couldn't believe my eyes. What a place to do a workshop!
Well, it kept getting better. The workshop itself was technically outstanding with the excellent facilities and was well supported by knowledgeable PT/PD printers who mixed the chemicals, did alot of handholding while we learned to coat the paper, expose it & develop it. That left us (the students) free to concentrate on making Precision Digital Negetives & learn the nuances of PT/PD printmaking. Who better could we learn from than Mark Nelson, the inventor of "Precision Digital Negatives for Silver & Alternative Processes", and Dick Arentz, author of "Platinum and Palladium Printing."
It doesn't stop there. A wonderful highlight of the week was the scrumptious meals that were prepared every day by Lynn and Staff for the whole group. Good ol' down home cookin' & served up family style.
You won't find a better experience than this, so don't fool around.... Just DO it!

Two additional darkrooms designed and equipped for the alternative processes, combined with large, accessible workspaces, assure maximum opportunity for a successful workshop experience. There is always ample darkroom time in the evenings for students to work. Workshop instructors can supervise evening sessions or there are un-supervised sessions with your lab assistant for those who want to make the most of their time here.
If location, location, location is important in real estate, it’s crucial in photography. The Photographers’ Formulary sits in the middle of 26 acres of Montana’s Swan Valley, surrounded by mountains to the east and to the west, and along the shores of seven glacial lakes. The Bob Marshall Wilderness, the largest wilderness area on the continent of North America, lies just across the highway on the western slopes of the Rockies and climbs to the peaks of the Rocky Mountains. Brilliant sunrises and golden sunsets add to the beauty of our unique location, and help make it a photographer’s land of opportunity. To the west, across pasturelands next door, the Mission Mountain Wilderness stretches into the distance.
Less than two hours to the north, Glacier National Park straddles the international border between the United States and Canada. It’s possible to spend your day wandering back and forth between two nations, and never realize it! Flathead Lake, the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi, is less than an hour’s drive, and with the many other lakes and streams the Swan Valley offers unparalleled natural beauty, free for the taking of photographs with cameras as small as the Minolta Minox, or as large as a behemoth 11”x17” view camera. If you like to hike to find that one spectacular picture then the Swan valley has an over abundance of hiking trails. Holland Lake Falls is one hike for the beginner a short hike of 1 1/2 miles with an incredible view of Holland Lake and the Mission Mountains from the top. You can go right up to the pool.

The Formulary Workshops have been created as a result of overwhelming requests from customers to fill a void in photographic education: photography workshops which include a broad range of alternative processes. To our knowledge, this is the first workshop group, in the entire history of photography, to offer such a broad range of alternative processes. Even so, The Formulary Workshops also include workshops in basic photo techniques, digital photography, and black and white darkroom. Watch for new and exciting classes for 2009. |
The Formulary Workshops are located in Montana's Swan Valley, 80 miles NE of Missoula and 70 miles south of Kalispell. Boasting some of the best wilderness lands in the Rocky Mountains, and blessed with mountain lakes, beautiful rivers, and abundant crystal clear creeks, the Swan Valley earns honors as an outdoor recreational paradise
Visitors to the valley enjoy a variety of activities in all four seasons of the year. The workshop itself sits on 26 acres right in the heart of this valley.
